Christmas is a wonderful time of year, but it is important to protect yourself and your family. Nearly half of holiday decoration fires happen because decorations are placed too close to a heat source. Here are some safety tips: 

1. Inspect holiday lights before you put them up; throw away light strands that are frayed. 
2. Water your Christmas tree every day; a dry tree can catch on fire.
3. Consider using battery-operated flameless candles that are in stable holders.
4. If you are not near the candle, blow it out so you prevent a fire. 
5. Your tree should be at least 3 feet away from heat sources like fireplaces, radiators, space heaters, candles, or heat vents. More than 1 in every 5 Christmas tree fires were caused by a heat source because it was too close to the tree.
